History of the Halter Top
The term "halter" comes from the German word for "holder," as in Büstenhalter, which literally means "bust holder" and is equivalent to "brassiere." The French designer, Madeleine Vionnet, made the halter and the cowl neck popular when she opened her fashion house, in 1912.
