Real-life engagement stories.
One of the perks of working in the wedding industry is hearing all of the great proposal stories out there! It goes without saying that, here at Wedding Shoppe Inc., we love all things wedding-related.However, if there is one thing we love more than talking about weddings, it's talking about love stories! We are so thrilled to share our brides' proposal stories with you. Here is our new Featured Bride, Kari M., sharing another one of our sweet engagement stories with you today on My Wedding Chat.
Our story.Jesse and I met through mutual friends during our freshman year of college. That year, our relationship never went beyond saying “Hi” to each other in the hallway, or occasionally hanging out in groups with friends. During our sophomore year, though, it just so happened that our dorm rooms shared a wall. My roommates and his roommates were all mutual friends, so we ended up hanging out quite a bit. After a full year of movies, flirting, and endless hours chatting in person and online, we left school as “just friends.” Jesse went back to North Carolina (where his parents live) and I went home to Willmar. To make things more complicated, Jesse was going to study abroad in Europe for all of fall semester our junior year, and I was going to study abroad in Ecuador over J-term (our winter break). We figured out that over an eight month period of both of us studying abroad, we saw each other a total of seven days. Even though our relationship was long distance, we messaged and Skyped as much as possible, and our relationship grew into something more than "just friends." When we got back from our trips, we became inseparable, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Like Many Proposal Stories, This One Starts with a "Big Date"!Early one week, Jesse told me that we were going on a big date that weekend—a three-part date to be exact, and that I needed to dress up for it. Of course, I wondered if this could be the Big Night where he proposed. But in a way I thought it was too “easy”; a big fancy date AND dressing up? It seemed too obvious…or so I thought. When I got home from work, Jesse told me that I needed a jacket and my new camera. He said that we were going on a photo-taking adventure, but wouldn’t tell me where we were going. He took me to Minnehaha Falls, which is where we had our first date before Jesse went to Europe. He said that he wanted to take some long exposure shots of the falls and go for a walk. I was humoring him because I was not feeling well and it was freezing out! I just wanted the pictures to be over so we could move onto the next part of the date.
Kari M. discovers fairy tale love stories really do happen! We ended up on the bridge that goes over the falls, and were talking about how it seemed like ages ago that we had our first date there, and how much our relationship had changed since then. There was a lull in the conversation, and Jesse said, “So…” I responded with “So…” Right then I knew this was it—the Big It! My heart was in my throat, my eyes started swelling up, and I couldn’t believe what was happening! He gave a cute speech about us growing old together, having a family, and having several furry pets, since we both love animals. Then he said, “I’m getting down on my knee now. Kari Lynn, will you marry me?” Without hesitation, I said, “Yes, of course!” After several minutes of freaking out and saying, “We’re engaged!” I still couldn’t believe it. Jesse told me we had to go to the next part of our date, at Kincaid’s in St. Paul, for a very romantic meal. And then, just when I thought our amazing evening was over, he took me on a horse drawn carriage ride around St. Paul! It was perfect. So many times I look down at my hand and still cannot believe that I am engaged to the most amazing man I have ever met. I am so blessed and cannot wait to become Mrs. Ducommun!
Thanks for adding to our sweet collection of love stories, Kari! We are so thrilled for you and Jesse, and we look forward to hearing more about the rest of your wedding planning journey.
