Trumpet Silhouette

The Trumpet Wedding Dress Silhouette definition: Is a trumpet wedding dress the best dress for your shape?

What is a Trumpet Silhouette?

The trumpet silhouette is a style of gown that features a gradually-flared skirt and a close-fitting bodice that skims the lines of the body, through the hips. Most trumpet wedding gowns begin to flare at about mid-thigh, and can be thought of as a sort of hybrid between the mermaid silhouette and the modified A-line silhouette.

Just as the name suggests, the gradual flare of a trumpet dress' skirt resembles the shape of the musical instrument trumpet's bell.

A trumpet dress, while similar to mermaid gowns, is a more understated silhouette, as the flare of the skirt of trumpet wedding gowns is much more gradual than that of the dramatically-flared mermaid's skirt. (See "Bringing the Drama in Trumpet Wedding Gowns")

(See "The Difference Between Trumpet and Fit and Flare and Mermaid Gowns," to discover the differences between the trumpet, mermaid, and the fit and flare silhouettes.)

A great example of the silhouette seen in trumpet wedding gowns is Mori Lee Bridal Gown 1813:

Benefits of the Trumpet Silhouette:

The silhouette of a trumpet wedding dress:

  • Adds feminine curves to a straight figure
  • Offers a well-balanced display of drama and glamour
  • Is a great option for full-figured brides who like the look of the mermaid silhouette, as it offers the perfect balance of curve accentuation and minimization. (See "Trumpet Style Wedding Dresses for Full Figured Brides")
  • Allows more freedom of movement than the similar style of mermaid dresses
    • Trumpet wedding gowns are less constrictive, and the flare generally starts at about mid-thigh, whereas the mermaid silhouette tightly hugs the hips and legs, flaring at the knees.

Things to Consider:

There are a few body shape fashion tips to keep in mind when choosing your gown (as always, these guidelines aren't 100% applicable, because every body is different.) A trumpet wedding dress:

The Difference Between Trumpet and Fit and Flare and Mermaid Gowns

The trumpet silhouette is quite similar to the fit and flare silhouette and the mermaid silhouette, and the three are often thought of as interchangeable terms, used to describe the same style. However, there are a few characteristics that can be used to differentiate the three silhouettes.

So, what is the difference between trumpet and mermaid? And what is the difference between the trumpet and the fit and flare?

  • The Trumpet starts to flare gradually, at about mid-thigh
  • The Mermaid flares dramatically, at or below the knee
  • The Fit and Flare flares right below the hip

Keep in mind however, that, in fashion, there is always room for style interpretation, so if your heart is set on the style of a trumpet wedding dress, you may also want to shop our selection of fit and flare bridal gowns and mermaid bridal gowns, as you may find some fabulous styles among them, that perfectly fit your fancy.

Bringing the Drama in Trumpet Wedding Gowns

While the basic form of the trumpet silhouette may be a more understated style than the basic silhouette of the mermaid style, that doesn't mean that a trumpet wedding dress can't pack just as much drama!
